Red Headed Stepchild by Jaye Wells - Book Review

RATE:★★★★
Pages:325
Author:Jaye Wells
Published: April 2009

Honestly, I picked up the Silver-tongued evil book first of all....I was in a rush and I wanted something to read. Not knowing this was the fourth book of the series...So then I looked at some reviews and it looked good so I went and bought the first book and I am glad I have done because it's been a long since I have read a book that drew me in so much that I couldn't put it down.

In a world where being of mixed-blood is a major liability, Sabina doesn’t really fit in. And being an assassin – the only profession fit for an outcast – doesn’t help matters. But she’s never brought her work home. Until now.

Her latest mission is uncomfortably complex, and threatens the fragile peace between the vampire and mage races. As Sabina scrambles to figure out which side she’s on, she uncovers a tangled political web, some nasty facts about her family and some unexpected new talents. Any of these things could be worryingly life-changing, but together, they could be fatal …

This time, it’s personal.

Pro's- Personally, I love fantasy sort- off books....It had vampires, magicians, demon, fairies.....that sort of stuff...But if you are like oh my gosh, another vampire book then you will be mistaken....This book apart from vampires is nothing like twilight....It's more mature and raw....I love it. Without saying to much the story is about a half vampire/ half mage and she goes through a lot to find true friends and to really learn who she can trust and who she can't. Obviously, being a half vampire her grandmother made her feel like a second class citizen and in turn she could only become an assassin and then she is put into a mission which in turn changes her life forever and she meets a lot different people and finally, discovers the truth.

The book was well-written and the pace was fast....I never wanted to skip pages because it was repetitive or going to slowly, which was good....The author had a lot of shocks and there still a lot mystery and hidden secrets that I assume is left to encourage us to read the other books of the series. What I love a lot about the book is there is so much going on it's amazing.

There is also a little romance....and what I love about it is isn't rushed like they met and the next 5 pages their saying they love each other...blah blah blah....The author left you in suspense like will it happen...will it not...And honestly I am surprised at what happened.....It was a surprise from the norm.

Con's- Honestly, I thought the author could work more on the characters....Even the main character I had a picture in my head but I couldn't relate or fully picture the character....not saying it was really bad but in other books I feel a real emotional connection with the characters...even if their bad or their good. But in contrast I did love the idea with the cat/demon....but even though he was a good character I still believe this character could have been absolutely amazing if there was more of a connection....I don't know. But that's it.

Would I recommend it? Yes, if you enjoy fantasy, vampire books....It's definitely a collection Item. No, if you don't enjoy reading fantasy books...

Warning Strong language.
